Class Action/Complex Litigation

HHKC has comprehensive experience in all phases of class action litigation. In addition to prosecuting several prominent class action cases, the firm has also been retained by defendants opposing class certification. With partners serving as adjunct professors and frequent lecturers in this area, HHKC has additionally served in the capacity of experts, consultants and outside counsel to lawyers engaged in fee disputes, discovery entanglements, and other issues involving settlement or certification. Should parties, counsel or the court seek a neutral facilitator with the ability to consider multiple points of view, we are available to serve as mediators or special masters in class action cases.

Just some of the cases in which HHKC has played a prominent role include:

  • Following the Continental Grain elevator explosion in 1977, HHKC was tapped to serve on the steering committee for injured plaintiffs and, in that case, helped to forge the template for current mass disaster litigation;
  • In Brodie v. PMIC, HHKC was lead counsel for insurance agents who recovered over $42.5 Million in a commercial class action against the agents' insurance company;
  • In Ieyoub Ex Rel Louisiana v. American Tobacco Company, HHKC helped the State of Louisiana recover 4.6 Billion dollars from the tobacco companies;
