Explosions & Fires

Litigating explosions and fires encompasses many areas of law, including personal injury, product liability, professional negligence, premises liability, and toxic torts. Most explosion and fire cases involve numerous, sometimes thousands, of plaintiffs who have suffered short and long term injuries, property damage, and many times have lost loved ones. HHKC has a litigation team well prepared for these cases.

We have been heavily involved in a number of diverse cases involving mass explosions and fires throughout the State of Louisiana, Gulf Coast Region and the South. For years, we have litigated cases involving catastrophes connected with refineries, chemical facilities, and industrial plants.

One noteworthy suit was the original mass-disaster class action suit, Whitney v. Continental Grain Co. , "the Continental Grain Explosion case." After the explosion, which killed many workers and caused some property damage, the Continental Grain Company offered workers compensation as the sole remedy because the precedents of the day suggested that was the best recovery. Nevertheless, in litigation, HHKC utilized arguments of personal injury, professional negligence, and products liability. We successfully recovered $25 million on behalf of our clients. This is a model case not only because of the verdict, but because it laid the foundation for modern complex litigation and class action cases.

In Dumas v. Angus Chemical Corp. , the firm represented over 1,000 clients who were victims of an explosion that occurred after a nitromethane plant in northern Louisiana caught fire. The explosion caused fatalities, injuries, vehicle and property damage, and evacuation. The settlement in this case was over $85 million. We are also currently representing many of the victims of the explosion of the Kaiser Plant that occurred on July 5, 1999 in Gramercy, Louisiana.

HHKC has also successfully pursued a number of cases involving severe electrical injuries from utility lines. These cases have often resulted in multimillion dollar confidential settlements.
