Civil Rights Litigation

Since the founding of our firm in the 1940's, HHKC has been involved in the promotion of civil rights. Believing that all persons were entitled to equal protection under the law, firm founder Harry Herman undertook to represent injured African Americans when many other firms would not.

Today, HHKC has represented African Americans in class actions involving insurance companies who charged higher premiums based on race, an insurance agent who was deprived of commission and business opportunity on racial grounds, and even a mother who filed suit because the judge in her divorce and custody suit was bribed to rule against her. Our civil rights victories include:

Thompson v. Metropolitan Life Insurance , co-lead counsel in class action on behalf of African Americans who were charged higher premiums because of race - $120,000,000.00;

Morris v. Life Insurance Company of Georgia , another race discrimination class action - $55,000,000.00;

Williams v. United Insurance Company , class action on behalf of African Americans who were sold inferior insurance policies based on race - $27,000,000.00.
